Performance in reach: the Sigma 500mm f/5.6 DG DN OS | Sports

Sigma unveiled a pair of lenses on two very extreme ends of the spectrum today.

An ultra-long lens designed for handheld shooting, the Sigma 500mm f/5.6 DG DN OS | Sports lens is coming in strong. The 500mm | Sports will be available in E-mount soon at a Mike’s Camera near you.

Several large-diameter low-dispersion glass elements (exclusive to Sigma in design) are to be thanked for Sigma’s ability to downsize this ultra-telephoto to an outrageous degree—without using any diffractive optics. Only a bit over 48 ounces in weight and 9.3 inches long, it’s a sight to see! The lens is dust- and splash-resistant, which is good, because this is the kind of lens you’ll want to take where one might find dust and splashes.

Like the new 15mm f/1.4 DG DN Diagonal Fisheye | Art lens, the 500mm | Sports‘ autofocus system is driven by High-response Linear Actuators and promises fast, accurate focus. The 500mm also features the OS2 optical stabilization algorithm, to further promote the ability to hand-hold on the go.

Diffraction and aberration have been minimized where possible, with a special emphasis on resistance to being overwhelmed by backlight. The body of the lens is covered with manual controls, letting you keep your eyes on the image, not on your gear.
