The S 28–200mm f/4–7.1 MACRO O.I.S. contains 17 elements in 13 groups (1 aspherical lens, 4 ED lenses, 1 UHR lens) engineered for sharp images with minimal distortion or aberrations. The front element is protected with a fluorine coating, and the whole lens is dust-, splash-, and freeze-resistant.
The nine-bladed circular aperture promises aesthetically appealing bokeh at any focal length, and the minimum focal length of 0.46 feet (at 28mm) offers an impressively close-up 0.5x magnification factor.
The light weight and compact size of the lens are promising enough vis a vis handheld photography, but that wasn’t enough for Panasonic! The lens is also Dual I.S. 2 compatible, correcting up to 6.5 stop of shake. Plus a stable center of gravity makes for great gimbal compatibility.
