New Tamron wide-angle zoom for Sony and Nikon

Coming soon to a Mike’s Camera near you: the 16–30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2!

(And, maybe shortly thereafter, to a camera even nearer you?)

Model A064 is expected to be available Thursday, July 31st for Sony E-mount and August 22nd—that’s a Friday—for the Nikon Z-mount.

You may be wondering, as I did, how a lens with a focal range not previously produced by Tamron for these mounts could be considered a G2 (second generation). The answer is that Tamron is positioning the 16–30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD as the successor to the highly-acclaimed 17–28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD. In addition to broadening the range, the new version boasts improved autofocus performance (including an update from RXD motors to VXD), a newly streamlined design, and compatibility with the Tamron Lens Utility, allowing you to customize lens functions for both photography and videography. The lens even has decent close-up chops, rare for a wide lens, with a maximum magnification of 1:5.4 at 16mm (7.5″ “minimum focusing distance).

The new body of the lens has retained the compactness of the 17–28 as well as its ability to deliver outstanding image quality, and with its release, the complete Tamron lens trinity* has been updated to G2. That means you can be confident that these new versions have incorporated the latest in Tamron’s optical tech—ultra-high-resolving power for modern high-resolution cameras, innovative coatings to prevent aberrations, and more.

*Wide, normal, and telephoto zooms, typically including a 24–70mm and 70–200mm, that comprise a kit that should cover almost all scenarios.
