Reach further, carry less with Sony’s RX10 V

How often do you find yourself wishing that you could pull the world close—or, from another perspective, put yourself right there next to it, whatever that elusive subject might be? Available in early August, Sony’s latest 1″ sensor superzoom promises one of the best ways to do either, offering significant upgrades to its predecessor.

The Sony RX10 V is built around a 20.1 MP 1.0-type Exmor RS sensor and BIONZ XR processor, delivering low noise and natural colors absorbed through a fixed Vario-Sonnar T* 24–600mm f/2.4–4.0 ZEISS lens (that’s 35mm equivalent FOV). A mouthful—but all of that should give you a pretty good idea of what this beast can do! For more, read on and/or check out the video below. Then, rush to a Mike’s Camera near you or click the link below to preorder!

The RX10 series has always been centered on the integrated, high-quality superzoom lens, and the RX10 V does not disappoint with its extremely crisp 25x-zoom ZEISS lens. Seriously—check out some of the shots in that video as well as the sample photos below. Some will take your breath away! It’s safe to say that the RX10 V is a viable all-in-one replacement for the whole camera bag when you need to move lightly.

Improvements over the RX10 IV include

  • Sony’s much-celebrated Real-time Recognition AF tracking technology with dedicated processing unit and 575 sensor AF points
  • Significant video improvements
  • Z battery: more than 50% longer battery life
  • Blackout-free AE/AF tracking even during bursts up to 30 fps
  • Redesigned button and grip layout inherited from α-series mirrorless cameras
  • Larger Quad-VGA OLED EVF
  • And more!

That loooooong lens is just as good at the wide end—focus on subjects as close to the lens as 1.18 inches! It looks highly intuitive, as well, with a control ring, zoom ring, aperture ring, AF/MF switch, and focus limiter switch all packed onto the barrel.

Sample photos demonstrate extraordinary detail and gorgeous bokeh, as well as Sony’s exceptional dynamic range in bright and low-light situations. Check out the difference single-shot DRO (“Dynamic Range Optimization”) can make:

On the motion side of pictures, The RX10 V reflects the rapid development that has taken place in the field since the release of version IV. Record 4K video at up to 120p for suuuper slow-motion in a variety of formats. Color is as controllable as you want it to be: the camera can record S-Log3 video to allow full color-grading in post, or you can use Sony’s S-Cinetone profile for cinematic output straight from the memory card. Twelve additional Creative Look presets offer further opportunity to seize the creative impulse on the go. More video notables include Active Mode stabilization, a Multi-Interface hot-shoe (for audio expandability), and shot-marking in-camera (!). You can even livestream in 4K! Social media creators take note: the RX10 V‘s UI automatically adapts to vertical use.

Monitoring is done using the aforementioned blackout-free EVF as well as a 3″ tilting touch screen, and the body is dust- and moisture-resistant. A sturdy, positive grip will also lend to your own f e a r l e s s p h o t o g r a p h y.

Fan clamor for an updated RX10 has been strong (and getting stronger), so don’t wait to pre-order or you might be waiting for a long time to actually hold this metaphorical hotcake in your hands!
