One camera, many stories: Canon announces the EOS R6 V (+ the RF20–50mm f/4 L IS USM PZ)

Today, Canon has announced two new entries in the EOS R line:

  • The EOS R6 V is designed to direct, offering pro-level videography performance. Available both body-only or in a kit with…
  • The RF 20–50mm f/4 L IS USM PZ, the first full-frame RF mount lens with an internal zoom design (great for balance) and power zoom functionality.

EOS R6 V

Conceptually an EOS R6 decked out for video, the EOS R6 V has more than a few significant feature differences from its still-oriented brother, not least of which is the physical redesign. Tally lights and custom function buttons cover the surface like dandelions in a public park. There’s even a tripod mount in the grip so you can commit to Content Creation. Less visible but equally physical, the EOS R6 V adds an internal cooling fan mechanism which essentially removes the possibility of having to cut a shoot short due to overheating. (Technically, you can only shoot “120 minutes or more” 7K RAW footage continuously, but in practice, that is not much of a restriction.)

If you’re not quite committed to 7K RAW (my hard drive screamed as I typed that), the EOS R6 V is capable of recording top-notch 4K MP4 video at up to 120 fps with pro-level codecs. The camera features an obscene variety of movie formats, so it’s unlikely to be incompatible with your workflow.

A DIGIC X processor powers the beast, with a 32.5 MP full frame CMOS sensor providing its brain with a constant stream of input. Canon wants you to have flexible options, so the camera features both dual-base ISO (for adaptive low-light performance) and dual card slots (one CFexpress Type B and one UHS-II capable SDXC (et al, though MMC and EyeFi cards are not supported)). A chonky LP-E6P battery powers the whole thing, with Canon stats claiming up to almost three hours or 640 shots per charge, varying heavily with selected movie recording format.

Whether you need a powerful yet totable camera for on-location exploration or a second angle power-zoomer, the EOS R6 V looks incredibly promising. As with what seems like all cameras and lenses these days, initial interest may exceed available stock, so be sure to get your pre-order in today!

RF20–50mm f/4 L IS USM PZ

As noted above, the RF20–50mm f/4 L IS USM PZ is the first full-frame RF mount lens with an internal zoom design and power zoom functionality, both highly appealing features for videographers. Physical controls include three rings (one zoom ring, one iris ring, and one control ring), AF/MF switch, stabilizer on/off switch, customizable control button, and a PZ/MZ switch (that’s “power zoom / manual zoom”). As it is an L series lens and features an ultrasonic motor, optical and AF performance can be expected to be stellar. All L-designated lenses must exceed rigorous internal benchmarks, employing the highest-end materials and coatings and made with the utmost care.

P.s.—you’re missing out on a huge part of a power zoom’s capabilities without a remote. Here’s one, and here’s another one integrated into a tripod grip. Highly recommended!
