PowerShot V1 • VISION TO VIDEO

Canon’s beloved PowerShot series of compact cameras is back, baby, with an all-new category. This vlog-centric camera is a great option for anyone who has great ideas but has been languishing in phone-production limbo. Experience the features a real camera has to offer and you’ll never go back.
The PowerShot V1 is built around a 22.3 MP 1.4″ imaging sensor married to a power-zooming 8.2–25.6mm f/2.8–4.5 lens (16–50mm 35mm equivalent FOV). That’s twice the sensor real estate of the popular 1″ sensor and many times that of almost any cell phone cameras. That means you’ll get better low-light performance, more powerful subject separation at wider apertures (and the nicer bokeh that comes with it), and less noise.
Speaking of noise, a windscreen is included to prevent wind noise when using the built-in microphone. This is a very nice bonus, but I would recommend that the very next thing you consider upgrading after your camera is your microphone. The quality difference audio can make in an otherwise incredible video is well-documented but often surprising to new creators. Click here to read more about perfecting your audio. The PowerShot V1 includes a 3.5mm microphone jack, so you can expand fairly easily.
Autofocus relies on Canon’s cutting edge Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for PowerShot AF system—a mouthful, to be sure, but you won’t even think about it while you’re shooting effortless 5.7K-oversampled 4K 60p video that wows your whole following. A built-in cooling fan will let you keep it up all day, too—no “overheated” moments except the ones in which you’ve run yourself ragged doing cool stuff.
Multiple workflows are accommodated: if you’re in it for the long haul, you can shoot in 10-bit C.LOG 3 (Canon’s wide dynamic range color mode) and grade to perfection later. If you’re a bit more off-the-cuff, of course, the PowerShot V1 is more than capable of capturing vivid, lifelike colors in-camera (horizontally or vertically), smoothing skin, applying Digital IS to boost the stability already provided by the built-in optical stabilizer (including clever Subject Tracking IS), and sending output directly to your smart device of choice for near-instant publication. The “lifelike” part is optional, of course—the PowerShot V1 comes with 14 color filters for a broad range of on-the-go creative expression.

EOS R50 V • BUILT FOR CREATORS / MADE FOR VIDEO

OK, that PowerShot sounds pretty dang cool—but what’s the next level up from there? The option to use Canon’s whole array of RF lenses and a still-larger sensor (APS-C) are the main advantages of the also-vlog-focused EOS R50 V—and those are quite the substantial upgrades! The Canon RF series of lenses is modern, carefully designed, and covers an incredible range of potentially desired perspectives. If you’ve never used an interchangeable lens camera, trust me: it’s a whole new world.
A vertical tripod mount (!) and a front-facing record button immediately distinguish the EOS R50 V from its more traditional brethren as a cinema-focused beast. Other controls are also tuned to allow quick access to some of the most relevant features: slow/quick mode for framerate manipulation, LIVE access, color control, and more are all accessible within seconds.
The EOS R50 V‘s APS-C sensor can shoot 24.2 MP stills and 4K 60p video, powered by the blazing DIGIC X Image Processor. Like the PowerShot V1, the EOS R50 V is equally capable at producing video for post-production as it is for out-of-camera distribution. The R50 V adds compatibility with significantly more advanced audio input via the multi-function accessory shoe, which supports 24 bit/4ch audio (adapter not included). Both cameras do have a 3.5mm microphone jack, though, fear not.
If all that’s not enough to get you excited to create, I don’t know what is. So what are you waiting for?

RF20mm f/1.4L VCM

Fast, wide, and premium—what more do you need to know? If you’ve used an L-series lens, you already halfway know this one, without ever meeting.
Whether you’re looking for a new professional option for landscape/architecture stills or need a unique viewpoint for videography, this is the lens you need. The RF20mm f/1.4L VCM features a dedicated manual iris ring (with optional detent) and a virtually silent Voice Coil Motor for linear focus control. Focus breathing? Not even a concern. Filters? Attach using the screw-on thread at the front of the lens or insert a cut gel filter in the rear holder. As is standard with RF lenses, you’ve got a control ring and customizable Fn button to work with for extra-intuitive control. And, FYI, the minimum focusing distance is 7.9″, allowing for some very interesting close-up background separation when shooting wide open.

RF-S14–30mm f/4–6.3 IS STM PZ

Despite its affordable price tag, the RF-S14–30mm f/4–6.3 IS STM PZ offers some of Canon’s premiere features: up to 5 stops of optical shake correction, smooth/quiet autofocus via a stepping motor, and optical elements designed to minimize distortion and aberrations. Plus, with a minimum focusing distance of only 5.9″ (max magnification: 0.38x) you can even get some funky close-up shots with your wide zoom. This is a compact and versatile addition to any budding videographer’s toolkit.
