The 85mm f/1.4 GM II brings significant upgrades to autofocus performance, resolution, and more, plus massive reductions in size and weight that should create a noticeable difference in the burden of hand-holding the lens for a significant period of time. Expect ultra-crisp resolving power all the way out to the edges thanks to two XA (eXtreme Aspherical) lens elements. Aberrations like flare and ghosting are tackled to the ground and hidden in a cave by Sony’s own Nano Coating AR II (see that second-gen again—they’re always developing). The new optical design has also kept bokeh in mind, and, while every GM lens offers stunningly gorgeous bokeh, it’s looking more natural than ever here. Buttery-smooth transitions from tack-sharpness to dreamy bokeh mean unprecedented control over focal expressiveness in video. Optically suppressed focus breathing helps, too.
