The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is the world’s first 24-70mm f/2.8 full-frame mirrorless lens with an internal zoom mechanism*, redefining versatility, stability and compactness for this essential class of pro zoom lens. The lens is faster and quieter with Nikon’s best AF system to date and a new optical formula that takes sharpness, bokeh and anti-glare performance to new levels.

So says Nikon by way of introducing the newest lens for their mirrorless full frame Z system. A fast-aperture normal zoom is arguably the most foundational lens in a professional’s kit, and Nikon appears to have given the second-generation NIKKOR Z 24–70mm f/2.8 S the attention that position deserves. Expected to be available September 17th, 2025, the 24–70mm joins the NIKKOR Z 14–24mm f/2.8 S and NIKKOR Z 70–200mm f/2.8 VR to complete the so-called “trilogy” of professional zoom lenses all with internal-only focus and zoom mechanisms: a world’s first for a lens with this range and aperture.

That upgrade to an entirely-internal zoom mechanism is one of the most striking differences from the first-gen version. Not only does this improve integration into video rigs, gimbals, and so-on, it dramatically improves the level of weather-sealing that is possible. The new 24–70mm offers exceptional resistance to dust and moisture, especially compared to its older sibling. More durability means less fear, and less fear means more epic photography. Get in there!
The lens is slightly longer than the previous version, but otherwise handles in a familiarly similar manner… and, thanks to a new “optical formula” using fewer elements, it’s 16% lighter; lighter, in fact, than any other lens in the world with this range and aperture. And that aperture looks lovely—check out the prime-rivaling bokeh in the sample photos, below, to see what a difference a bump to 11 rounded blades made!
Nikon has also put a tremendous amount of work into the autofocus system, citing a host of upgrades and going as far as to say that the NIKKOR Z 24–70mm f/2.8 S II has the best Nikon autofocus system to date:
- The entirely new voice coil motor driving the thing is up to five times faster than V1.
- Sound and vibration have been reduced by 50%, thanks to improved guide and actuator mechanisms.
- Scan time has been reduced by 40%.
- Tracking performance has improved.
- Focus breathing has been reduced by more than 50%.
- Minimum focusing distance has been shortened to 9.5″ (at 24mm), max mag 0.32x at 70mm
They’ve also specifically highlighted the fact that there is virtually no jitter when filming push-ins or “Vertigo shots,” which really excited the cinema nerd in me. I have never even considered using autofocus for a Vertigo shot, but how awesome is that for slim/solo operations? We really do live in the future.
Other upgrades include:
- a selectable detent for the aperture ring—that is to say you can turn the click on and off
- a more affordable and available filter size of 77mm (rather than 82mm)
- a window in the lens hood to enable control of rotating filters (e.g. a CPL or VND)
- improved flare control
- focus limiter switch
- extra Fn button for vertical-shot access
This one’s definitely going to catch the eye of Z-shooters worldwide, and might even convert some new ones. Visit us in-store or online today to make sure you’re one of the first to enjoy this significant upgrade!
