Tamron two-fer: new lenses, new prizes

Tamron’s been busy lately. In one big announcement, they revealed three very reasonably-priced new lenses for Sony’s full-frame E-mount mirrorless system—two of which will be available this month—as well as their intentions to release a fast telephoto for full-frame E-mount in the near but as-yet-indeterminate future.

The 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 (Model F050), 24mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 (Model F051), and 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 (Model F053) will all start at just $349.99 (click the model names to pre-order)! All three have the same 67mm filter size, which is also the same as Tamron 17-28mm F/2.8 and 28-75mm F/2.8, so you won’t have to waste valuable shooting time figuring out which lens caps and filters belong to which lens.

That “M1:2” in the model names indicates that each of the three lenses can focus quite close, providing 1:2 magnification level. It’s not full-on macro, but it’s pretty awesome for a prime at this price! All three lenses are moisture-resistant to help keep water out of your gear and feature a fluorine coating to keep oils out of your images. The lenses are, of course, fully compatible with advanced Sony features like Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.

Somewhere down the line, we’ll also be seeing the 70–180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD (A056), but price, delivery info, and other information remain TBD. Even so, it’s great to see such an ongoing outpouring of love for a mirrorless system from the venerable lens manufacturer.

In other exciting news, the SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD and 17–28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD won a Grand Gold Prize (the highest rank) and a Gold Prize, respectively, at the Digital Camera Grand Prix 2020. This is the ninth time a Tamron lens has taken the highest prize in its category! Well done, folks. I think it’s safe to say that “third party” doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice first-place quality. Bringing it all together for that single shot

“We want to deliver a perfect image to people who love photography.” That’s our obsessive goal for all Tamron lenses. This goal forms the basis of our concept for the SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045). The exceptional image quality of this fast fixed focal lens makes it worthy of being the lens that marks the milestone 40th anniversary of the SP (Superior Performance) Series. Uncompromising resolution at wide-open aperture combines with a velvety bokeh defocus blur that gently blends away from the ultra-sharp focus area. Ghosting and flare are suppressed to the utmost degree by the newly-developed BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating. Additionally, our new and exclusive Dynamic Rolling-cam mechanism enables the heavy F/1.4 focusing unit to move with incredible accuracy at high-speed and deliver the best AF performance in every shooting situation. Truly, the Model F045 is the distillation of all of the optical technologies and manufacturing knowhow that Tamron has developed.

The 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046) is a large aperture ultra wide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount that was designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras and provides unrivalled portability and superb image quality. It’s the smallest and lightest weight zoom lens in its class*. The dramatic 17-28mm zoom range adds new dimensions to photographing landscapes, cityscapes, mountains and scenic vistas-as well as groups and building interiors. The combination of ultra wide-angle focal length and an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 0.19m (7.5 in) at the wide-angle end encourages richly expressive and creative photography.
