You didn’t think Olympus would let their 100th birthday go by without some sort of exciting news for their loyal shooters, did you? Here it is! At the intersection of high performance and highly compact, the E-M5 Mark III is a pretty huge update to 2015’s E-M5 Mark II.

Key upgrades
- 20.4 MP sensor (up from 16.5 MP)
- 4K video
- Extensive body refinement: see below
- 121-point Phase Detection AND Contrast Detection AF (up from an 81 point, Contrast-only system on the Mark II)
- Up to 30 fps silent-shooting burst mode
- Bluetooth in addition to Wi-Fi
- Slightly lighter body than the Mark II
Surrounding the sensor, Olympus has worked in a 0.5-stop increase in IBIS effectiveness (rated at 5.5 stops now) and upgraded the sensor-shift Tripod High-Res Shot mode to allow for a new maximum 50 MP size as well as a 25 MP option.

On the hardware front, the Mark III is actually just over 50g lighter than the Mark II, despite being ever-so-slightly larger in width and depth. The depth increase is due to a more positive grip, a feature we heard requested a lot by our customers—as did Olympus, apparently! If you have particularly big hands, an even larger grip expansion unit (with additional control dial and shutter button) will also be available.
The buttons and dials on the camera body have seen some movement, bringing the black sheep’s design more in line with that of the other members of the OM-D family.

Of course, you’ll see numerous software improvements as well, like the ability to fine-tune the assignments of your dials, processing improvements powered by the new TruePic™ VIII processor, and—one of the fun upgrades we saw first on the E-PL9—the Instant Film Art Filter.
The OM-D E-M5 Mark III is bound to be a worthy new member of the OM-D series. We’d love to chat with you about it, so stop by your local Mike’s Camera store today! If you happen to be ready to commit, we’ll make sure you’re one of the first to receive this tiny yet powerful super-shooter.
