The FX5 drinks in your dreams via an 18.2 MP full-frame, fully-stacked Exmore RS CMOS sensor and the powerful BIONZ XR2 processing set. Sony’s ordinarily extraordinary Fast Hybrid AF is on board of course, and will track a subject’s eyes, head, and body across a wide variety of subject categories—leaving you, busy director/DP/sound guy/gaffer/gopher, more confident in your captures and thereby less stressed. A highly effective, 5-axis image stabilization system on the sensor helps, too.

Capable of an ever-more-dizzying array of recording options, it’s worth noting high speed specs:

• 5K up to 60 fps
• 4K up to 120 fps
• 1080p up to 240 fps

Whether you need more pixels or more frames per second, you’ll certainly not lack for either.

5K 3:2 open gate internal X-OCN RAW recording

Unlocking the entire full-frame sensor, you no longer have to accept limitations on your recording. Whether your aim is to produce 3:2 video, leave room to crop/stabilize, or play with multiply-aspect-ratioed outputs from the same shot, it’s a breath of fresh air. Footage must be recorded in Sony’s X-OCN RAW, but that’s not a problem. X-OCN RAW enables 16 bit linear scene recording while keeping file sizes reasonable—a strikingly practical benefit, as you’re aware if you’ve done any video recording with modern cameras.

Three base ISO options

The FX5 enables you to switch between base ISOs of 800, 4000, and 12800, depending on the lighting you’re attempting to wrassle, encompassing over 15 stops of dynamic range.

Maximize your recording latitude and minimize noise to unlock smooth, natural gradients.

More movie-first features

• The 3.5″ touchscreen monitor can be tilted for visibility from almost any angle (see below).
• Five screw holes for accessory mounting are distributed across the body, plus two more on the bottom for tripod use.
• Anamorphic shooting is supported natively for 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x squeeze factors.
• Sony’s famous S-Cinetone look is also available for those who might like to lighten the load in post, as well as three S-Log3 modes for those who’d like the opposite.
