Smooth & balanced: Nikon’s second-gen NIKKOR Z 70–200mm f/2.8

Nikon have officially announced the NIKKOR Z 70–200mm f/2.8 VR S II! One of the biggest updates, compared to the prior version, is a remarkable 26% reduction in weight—something for which your neck and back will thank you profusely.

The minimum focusing distance has also been shortened: from 0.5 m to 0.38 m at the wide end and from 1.0 m to 0.8 m zoomed all the way in. Nikon’s been working steadily on NIKKOR Z autofocus performance since 2020 and these developments have, of course, been included in the update. From Nikon: the “Multi-focus system with Silky Swift Voice Coil Motors (SSVCM) is 3.5x faster and 17.5x more precise than the previous generation.” Yowza!

The sample photos provided by Nikon (see below) in conjunction with their Ambassadors demonstrate absolutely stunning bokeh and a notable lack of flare and ghosting, even in harshly backlit conditions. A convenient Arca-Swiss mount (detachable), all-internal zoom, and robust weather sealing indicate a physical experience just as smooth as the optical results.
