Sometimes people underestimate the computerhood of modern cameras, but the real star of the show in this upgrade is the EXPEED7 processor. The same one used by Nikon’s flagship mirrorless camera, the Z9, the EXPEED7 allows the camera to pull off some really impressive tricks. Some of these include:
- more than triple the mechanical shutter burst rate of the Z5 (14 fps from 4.5), plus up to 30 fps using electronic shutter
- tremendous improvement to the speed, accuracy, and detection of the deep-learning-based autofocus system—the Z5II can now detect nine different subject categories in situations as dark as -10EV (compared to -3EV on the Z5)
- AF subject detection categories include people, birds, dogs, cats, cars, bicycles, motorcycles, trains, and airplanes
- improved high ISO performance for new opportunities in low light (performances, astrophotography, nightscapes, and more)
- full-width 4K video up to 30 fps, cropped 4K up to 60 fps, HD video up to 120 fps for true slow-motion recording
- H.265 10-bit N-log (not possible on Z5)
- RED LUTs
- in-camera timelapse recording
- general performance boost for all features
The Nikon Z5II, in addition to bringing the oomph to the table, is designed to make creative expression as effortless and intuitive as possible. A dedicated button on the top of the camera brings up 31 built-in Picture Controls, with more available for download here and through the Nikon Imaging Cloud. All kinds of looks are readily accessible, from subtly striking to fun and funky. (I know my wife gets a kick out of experimenting with them on her Nikon Zf.) Offering N-Log for video recording and RED LUT support also blasts the ceiling off of your movie-making control—with a little work in the editing bay, any look is within reach. With a video recording limit of two hours (up from 30 minutes on the Z5), long-form recording is accessible as well.

On a physical level, the Z5II stands out with its tremendously grippable grip, super-bright EVF (3x more than the Z5, 6x more than most comparable cameras on the market), and dust-/drip-resistant construction. Internal VR (Vibration Reduction in Nikonian) is rated at a very respectable 7.5 stops, too. And this is a camera that’s ready to mix and mingle—Nikon Imaging Cloud allows not only the aforementioned downloading of Picture Control presets, but automatic firmware updates and automatic transfer of images to the cloud storage service of your choosing, so you don’t have to rely exclusively on its dual UHS-II SDXC slots for backup. Nice!
