The Canon RF16–28mm f/2.8 IS STM is another great option for the great outdoors

A new wide-angle zoom in Canon’s full-frame mirrorless RF stable promises superior quality at an attainable price point—the RF16–28mm f/2.8 IS STM elegantly strikes a delicate balance. Its frame now taking the crown as the smallest, lightest RF zoom lens, its optics nigh-L: this one is worth pondering for anyone who might want a wide-angle zoom tucked in their pack. Available February 2025… pre-order yours today!

The RF16–28mm f/2.8 IS STM weighs just a bit under a pound, and Canon claims sharpness on par with the RF15–35mm f/2.8 L IS USM… impressive! Four UD lenses and 2 aspheric elements surely have something to do with it. It’s also worth noting that the 16–28mm has a perfect match in the RF28–70mm f/2.8 IS STM. A seamlessly usable, familiarly-framed ecosystem seems to be developing here.

The respectably bright f/2.8 aperture is constant throughout the zoom range and sharpness should hold from edge to edge. If you want to take it all in, you can take this one anywhere.

Stabilization is rated at 5.5 stops using the technology in the lens alone, with compatible-body combinations possible up to 7.5 stops. Focus breathing has also been intentionally minimized and STM-driven autofocus optimized for speed and accuracy, so this is a fine choice for videographers looking to take a broad view.

Surprisingly, the option has also been honored to get (relatively) close with this lens. At the 28mm end, minimum focusing distance is only 8″, yielding a magnification factor of 0.26x. There’s also another equivalence to true L-series lenses, which is the robust weather-resistant construction. With a frame so compact and uses so versatile, you’ll want to bring this lens wherever you go. Fortunately, you can, and without fear! Visit us in person or click here now to place your order.
