Optical awe
I think we all know about what can be expected of a Sony G Master lens at this point, but it’s worth repeating: these stand at the absolute pinnacle of Sony’s engineering capability. Expect, de rigeur, edge-to-edge sharpness at all apertures, dreamy bokeh, incredible resolving power, and the best image optimization tech. This particular lens uses three XA (or eXtreme Aspheric) elements (plus Aspherical, Super ED, and ED elements) to create the most accurate, pleasing details. Chromatic aberrations, flare, and ghosting have all been repressed, as well, featuring the Nano AR Coating II among other superior design features. A super-bright aperture performs well in low light, too.
1.25′ minimum focusing distance offers a respectable capability for close focusing. (Check out the super cool photo, below, of the ballerina’s hand in a sea of bokeh for an example.) Videographers will be pleased to see subdued focus breathing and smooth iris shifts for bokeh-based storytelling, and everyone will love the fast, quiet, and reliable autofocus system, driven by four Linear XD motors. That autofocus can even hold tracking while zooming!
Intuitive experience
The lens is surprisingly compact and balanced for prolonged shooting—only 32.4 oz, measuring 3 3/4″ x 5 5/8″. It’s reliable and easy to control for professional use. On the physical controls front, we’re looking at two customizable buttons, an aperture ring with a lock switch and optional detent, a zoom ring with adjustable torque, and a focus ring with linear response. The lens is dust- and moisture-resistant, and the overall build quality is such that you’ll feel no qualms in your pursuit of the dream… the dream of fearless photography!
