I love it when early-bird calendar offers start to pop up, for several reasons. One, it’s usually about the same time as the Halloween stores emerge from the unknown depths in which they hide the rest of the year (which is to say, the start of spooky season, which I love). More saliently, it’s a great reminder for me to start on my own, and it fills me with hope that more people will do the same.
It’s been a holiday tradition for the last several years for my wife—who is a phenomenal photographer, pen-and-inker, printer, and painter, among other talents—and I—just eager enough to add spice with my more demented words, etc.—to collaborate on a calendar for the coming year. These are super useful in our own lives (as well as gratifying to look at a job well done) and make great gifts for almost everyone to whom we might be looking to give them. Not only does it give us an excuse to be creative and share the results with loved ones, but people actually seem to really appreciate them. The calendars are the only gifts we’ve ever had people specifically request (dare I say nigh unto demand) in following years.
My point here is that there’s no reason this couldn’t work for you, too. It’s difficult to overdo—if you received calendars from both your brother and your best friend, for example, you could put one up in the kitchen and bring one to work. Who wouldn’t like the ability to glance at the date almost anywhere, and how much better does that get when paired with a year-long exhibit of fresh art?
Plus, it’s unimpeachably crafted, a truly personal gift. Went on a memorable trip with the family? What a great way to enjoy the best photos all through the next year! Or, highlight your favorite people during their birth month by making them the featured portrait. And we can do a lot more than just slap a single photo on every other page. So go forth and get designing, whether for yourself alone or everyone you know. There are few things in life can hold the perfect balance between practical and aesthetic, so let’s cherish those that do!
